Aikansa huippunäyttelijät - etunenässä Burt Reynolds ja Jon Voight - tekevät taitavan vähäeleiset ja tähtikuviensa kannalta poikkeukselliset, itseään korostamattomat roolisuoritukset, mutta suurimpaan osaan kohoaa silti määrittelemätön ja kesyttämätön luonto - ohjaajansa rakastama ja usein varioima ikiteema ihmisen suhteesta ympäristöönsä.

The adaptation of a James Dickey novel that is one of John Boorman's most important films is an atmospheric and disconcerting journey into nightmarish scenes of wild, untamed nature and threatening encounters with backwoods inhabitants. Four urban males have decided to spend their holiday canoeing, away from any signs of civilisation, but the trip intended to be rest and relaxation quickly turns into a merciless struggle for survival as the pristine scenery reveals its true face of violence and sexual perversion. Deadly dangers lurk in the shadows of the trees and untold secrets await beneath the ripples of the river...

Before long, the men find out they are the prey in an alarming game of hide and seek and are forced to reinvent themselves. Top actors of their day - especially Burt Reynolds and Jon Voight - give superb low-key performances that are truly exceptional in terms of their star images, but the greatest star of the film is the nature, always undefinable and untamed. The relationship between the man and his environment so prominent in this film is a theme loved and often repeated and varied by the director.

Deliverance is a classic of its own genre, and guaranteed to give sleepless nights to the festival audiences in the nightless night. To Boorman, the film was the final breakthrough to the highest class of filmmaking heavyweights. (LT)
