Toiminnallisiin elokuviin suuntautuneen Boormanin tuotannossa Odotuksia on poikkeus. Se on hänen paluunsa kotimaa Englantiin omakohtaisen projektin merkeissä. Se on herkkä kasvutarina yhdeksänvuotiaan pojan kokemuksista Lontoon pommitusten aikaan. Sota ei merkitse pojalle pelkästään kauhua, vaan runsaasti uusia kokemuksia ja seikkailua. Pojan isä on mobilisoitu armeijan toimistotehtäviin ja äiti yrittää pitää perheen koossa keskellä raskaita aikoja.
Toinen päähenkilö on pojan aikuiseksi kasvava isosisko, jota paikalle kerääntyneet sotilaat kiinnostavat. Boorman ei kuvaa sotaa tragediana, ainoastaan poikkeustilana, joka luo kaikille kolmelle päähenkilölle uudenlaisen kokemusympäristön. Boorman luo herkän kuvan brittiläisestä keskiluokasta, hyvin toisenlaisen kuin muutamat sotavuosiin sijoitetut brittisarjat, jotka ovat enimmäkseen sotamiljööseen sijoitettuja melodraamoja. Hän ei vältä vaikeitakaan ristiriitoja, mutta näkökulma on koko ajan yhdeksänvuotiaan pojan.
Elokuva on tunteiden historiaa, jonka aikakausi on toteutettu näkemyksellä ja pikkutarkasti. Sarah Milesin esittämä äiti on elokuvan ristiriitaisin, samalla mielenkiintoisin hahmo: vaikka hän on rakastunut toiseen mieheen, hän pysyy uskollisena lastensa isälle. Samaan aikaan hän opettaa tytärtään olemaan uskollinen tunteilleen tämän miettiessä rakkauden olemusta. Among Boorman's action-oriented films, Hope and Glory is an exception. It is his return to native England with an autobiographical project. The film tells a gentle story of a nine-year-old boy growing up amidst the wartime London's bombings. The war does not signify only terror for the boy, but also many new experiences and adventure. The boy's father has been drafted to clerical duties for the military, and the mother tries to keep the family together in the hard times.

Another main character is the boy's sister who is approaching adulthood and naturally interested in the soldiers coming to the area. Boorman does not depict war as a tragedy, but just as unusual circumstances which create a new environment of experiences for all three main characters. Boorman paints an insightful picture of British middle class that is very much unlike some British wartime series which are mostly melodramas set in a war milieu. He does not avoid even the most complicated conflicts, but the point of view remains that of a nine-year-old boy throughout the film.

The film is a history of emotions, portraying its era with vision and detail. The mother, played by Sarah Miles, is the most conflicted and most interesting character in the film: although she is in love with another man, she stays true to the father of her children. At the same time she teaches her daughter to remain true to her feelings, as she ponders on the true meaning of love. These emotional tumults do not, however, give the film a soap-opera feel thanks to both its point of view and the meticulous adherence to realism. (VpM)
