Heikki Kujanpää ohjasi vuonna 2005 Q-teatterille väkevän näytelmän runoilijapariskunta Lauri Viidan ja Aila Meriluodon myrskyisästä suhteesta. Kolme vuotta myöhemmin Kujanpää ohjasi aiheen elokuvaksi.

Kun nuori Aila Meriluoto 1940-luvulla rakastui itseään vanhempaan, naimisissa olevaan Lauri Viitaan, oli se tietysti sopimatonta. Suhde kuitenkin kehittyi ja pari perusti perheen. Ajan mittaan perhe-elämästä muodostui suoranainen helvetti, kun mielenterveydeltään pahasti horjuva Viita dominoi ja tyrannisoi läheisiään.

Raastava ihmissuhde on kuvattu pariskunnan kuvitteellisen tyttären Helenan näkökulmasta. Isäänsä sokeasti ihaillut tytär imeytyy vanhempiensa tarinan traagisuuteen niin intensiivisesti, että hänen oma identiteettinsä alkaa hajota. Elokuvan kolmessa pääosassa ovat samat näyttelijät kuin näytelmäversiossakin, ja he kaikki saivat viime helmikuussa roolisuorituksistaan Jussi-palkinnot. (Mervi Herranen)

In 2005, Heikki Kujanpää directed a powerful play for Q-theatre about the tumultuous relationship between Lauri Viita and Aila Meriluoto. Three years later he directed the topic into a film.

When the young Aila Meriluoto fell in love with the much older, married Lauri Viita in the 1940s, it was of course improper. However, their relationship evolved and the couple started a family. With time their family life turned into a hell on earth, when the mentally badly unstable Viita dominated and tyrannised his next of kin.

The gruelling relationship is portrayed from the perspective of the couple’s imaginary daughter, Helena. The daughter, who has had a blind admiration for his father, is so intensively sucked into the tragedy of her parents’ situation that her own identity begins to fall apart. The three main roles of the film are played by the same actors as in the stage version, and they all received Jussi movie awards for their work last February. (MH)
