Viisaan lämmin perhekuvaus Summer Hours merkitsee Oliver Assayasille
paluuta Kun kesä on ohi -elokuvan tapaisiin, hänelle – ja monille muille
ranskalaisille – parhaiten sopiviin ympyröihin. Jossain Jean Renoirin
tai Eric Rohmerin elokuvien välimaastossa Assayas kertoo ylemmän
keskiluokan perheestä maalaisidyllissään lähellä Pariisia. Juhlitaan 75-vuotiasta leskiäitiä, joka on pitänyt taiteilijakodissa ylpeänä huolta edesmenneen enonsa arvostetuista kokoelmista.
Kun äiti kuolee, syntyy monille tuttu tilanne: perinnön vaalimisesta ei
tahdota päästä yksimielisyyteen – kolmesta sisaruksesta kaksi,
taiteilija Adrienne (Juliette Binoche) ja liikemies Jérémie (Jérémie
Renier) ovat asettumassa perheineen ulkomaille. Opettaja Frédéric
haluaisi ainoana säilyttää kodin perheen hallussa.
Assayas kuvaa ilmavasti, pakottoman luontevasti kuinka globalisaatio
ottaa mittaa paikallisuudesta perheenjäsenten keskellä. Hautajaisia
seuraavat arvioimiset, huutokaupat ja jakamisneuvottelut korostuvat
taiteen tavaraluonteen vuoksi. Äidin rakas palvelija saa omansa ja
salaisuuksiakin paljastuu. Mutta loppujaksossa palataan taas

Käsikirjoittaja Jacques Rémyn ja unkarilaisen äidin poika Oliver Assayas
(1955) on avustanut maailmankuulua Cahiers du Cinema -lehteä ja
julkaissut elokuvakirjoja, mm. haastattelukirjan Ingmar Bergmanista.
Esikoispitkänsä Disorder (1986) jälkeen hän on ohjannut 11 muuta pitkää
elokuvaa, joista tunnetuin lienee hänen silloisen hongkongilaisen
näyttelijävaimonsa Maggie Cheungin tähdittämä vampyyrikomedia Irma Vep.
Kun kesä on ohi taas edusti perinteisempää ranskalaista lähikuvaa
1990-luvun pariisilaisten nuorten aikuisten sukupolvesta.
Käsikirjoittajana hän on toiminut omien ohjaustensa lisäksi mm. André
Téchinén elokuvissa.

The warm and insightful story of a family, Summer Hours, brings Oliver Assayas back to themes familiar from films like Late August, Early September, which do seem best suited for him and many other French filmmakers alike. In this film, which places itself somewhere between Jean Renoir’s and Eric Rohmer’s works, Assayas tells a story of an upper middle-class family in their rural bliss near Paris. Everyone has gathered together to celebrate the 75-year-old widowed mother, who has proudly maintained her late uncle’s famed collection in the artist’s home.
When the mother dies, a familiar pattern arises: agreement over the fate of the collection does not come easily – two of the three siblings, the artist Adrienne (Juliette Binoche) and the businessman Jérémie (Jérémie Renier) are about to settle abroad with their families. The teacher Frédéric is the only one who would like to keep the house within the family.
With light, unforced ease, Assayas portrays globalization combating local values amidst the family members. The funeral is followed by appraisals, auctions and settlement negotiations, which are emphasized by the material nature of the artwork. The mother’s beloved servant is not left empty-handed either, and even some secrets get unveiled. However, towards the end of the film we return to the enviably cozy summer feeling. (TM)

Oliver Assayas (b.1955), a son of the scriptwriter Jacques Rémy and a Hungarian mother, has contributed to the world-renowned Cahiers du cinéma magazine and published books about cinema, such as a work of compiled interviews with Ingmar Bergman.
After his first feature film Disorder (1986), he has directed eleven other features, the best known of which being the vampire comedy Irma Vep. It starred his then wife, the Hong Kong –born actress Maggie Cheung. Late August, Early September, however, represented a more traditional French close-up on the 1990’s Parisian young adults’ generation. In addition to his own films, he has written film scripts for directors such as André Téchiné.
