Englannin suurimpiin elokuvantekijöihin kuuluva Terence Davies tekee komean comebackin vuoden huomatuimpiin dokumenttifilmeihin kuuluvalla teoksellaan Of Time and the City. Davies kärsi lähes vuosikymmenen rahoituspaitsiota, kunnes sai ohjata tämän vaatimattomasti budjetoidun Euroopan kulttuurikaupungin "tilaustyön". Lopputulos on kaikkea muuta: tekijänsä syvästi henkilökohtainen, tunteellinen dokumentti koti-Liverpoolista, melkein kuin musikaali.

Terence Davies pääsi 10 vuoden kirjanpitäjän uran jälkeen näyttelijäkouluun 26-vuotiaana. National Film Schoolissa 1976–83 valmistunut "Terence Davies -trilogia" kiinnitti jo huomion omaperäiseen kykyyn – joka on kuitenkin saanut ohjata vain viisi pitkää elokuvaa.
Cannesissa 1988 esikoispitkä Rakkaat muistot ihastutti musiikillisella runollisuudellaan elvyttäessään Daviesin muistoja Liverpoolin sodanjälkeisissä työläiskortteleissa. Päivä painui mailleen jatkoi omaelämäkerrallisuutta, kun taas hienostuneen loistelias Sydän vieraassa talossa oli aivan toista maata: Edith Wharton -filmatisointi 1900-luvun taitteen New Yorkin aristokraateista.

Terence Davies, one of the greatest contemporary English film makers makes a handsome comeback to the most noted documentaries of the year with his work Of Time and the City. Davies battled with funding difficulties for almost a year until he got commissioned to direct a modestly budgeted film about Liverpool as the 2008 European Capital of Culture. The result is everything but that: a deeply personal and emotional documentary, almost a musical, of the director’s home town Liverpool.
The focus is equally on time and how it passes by, and on remembering. The personal touch, the history of the changing city combined with Davies’ personal history, increases the interest towards the film immensely, although the viewer might not feel familiar with the director’s feelings of guilt which are tied in together with Catholicism and being gay. A child of a working-class family, Davies who seems in turns funny and angry, is nowadays unafraid to speak his mind neither about religion nor monarchy and the rich for that matter.
Of Time and the City focuses on Davies’ childhood after the war and in the 1950’s. The 60’s Beatle-mania does not belong to that history, so the musical tunes and hits of the day change into classical music of for instance the Finnish composer Sibelius. The combination of music, archive footage, commentary and poetry flows beautifully through the scene of the city memories. (TM)


After a 10-year career as an accountant, Terence Davies got accepted into an acting school at the age of 26. Already in 1976-83 “The Terence Davies Trilogy” at the National Film School turned people’s attention to the original talent, who nevertheless has gotten the chance to direct only five feature-length films.
In Cannes 1988 his first feature Distant Voices, Still Lives enthralled with its musical poetry as it revived Davies’ memories of the post-war Liverpool working-class neighborhood. The Long Day Closes continued along the autobiographical path, whereas the sophisticated and spectacular House of Mirth represented something completely different – an Edith Wharton filming about New York aristocracy at the turn of the 18th Century.
